Exporting the coal pollution problem

A 2.2% rise in EU carbon emissions is forecast this year, while US emissions should fall by a similar amount thanks to exports of its coal to Europe. But given the comparative weakness of US climate policy, the trend won't last long.

Shale gas has jolted traditional roles in the planet's climate drama, giving cleaner fuel to the United States, whose displaced coal has headed to Europe to pollute the old continent.
