A WHIMSICAL ad where people play on a summer's day among drifts of apple blossoms, which at first seem to be snow, was the most searched for ad in Australia this year.

The Summer Blossom ad for Strongbow cider was made by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and featured the hit Young Blood by New Zealand band the Naked and Famous. Google's annual brand survey ranked the Strongbow ad the top searched for ad, followed by a Bonds ad featuring the actor Rachael Taylor, and Telstra's new ad campaign. AAMI and Toyota came fourth and fifth respectively.

Google also ranked the most commonly searched for Australian brands, placing the Commonwealth Bank number one for the second year, followed by the AFL, which jumped six spots. ANZ came third.

The top searched for shopping brands ranked eBay first, followed by Harvey Norman and Woolworths.

Karen Stocks, Google Australia's head of display and YouTube, said the rankings had some lessons for advertisers, who could use online appeal to reach a wider audience. "When people love the ads they see, they will seek them out online. If you create ads with compelling or surprising content you can reach a broader audience than with just a TV flight."
