New chief

Westpac has appointed ANZ's John Harries as general manager of strategic marketing in its Australian financial services division. The appointment follows the sudden departure of the former one, Damian Eales, a month ago.

Facebook's average cost per thousand impressions (CPM) has jumped 58 per cent over the past 12 months since quarter two in 2011, according to a TBG Digital report. TBG's Global Facebook Advertising Report said Facebook's advertising "continues to thrive", with the growth driven by the sponsored stories" adverts and mobile ads.

Airborne win

Lego Australia has appointed the agency Airborne to work closely with its sister Mediabrands agency UM to develop creative and media ideas for Lego in the local market. This is Airborne's second big client win since it became part of IPG Mediabrands in January.

In an Australian first, the September issue of Better Homes and Gardens features a Genie activation, which allows users to "pin" images directly from the magazine to the pinboard-style social photo sharing website, Pinterest.

It works by allowing readers to scan selected images with the Genie app, and instantly be taken to Pinterest where they can repin images directly from the page.

Daily deals

QueerDeals, a new daily deals site, is aiming at the gay community. Claiming to be Australia's first gay-friendly daily deals website, it will donate a percentage of its profits to charities that support the lesbian, gay and bisexual community.
