Question

I invest in the International Portfolio and saw the US was up a lot over the last week but the value of my account wasn’t. Why?

Answer

The InvestSMART International Equities Portfolio is designed to give broad exposure to global markets. The US makes up a large portion of this (but not all). One of the risks when it comes to investing internationally is currency fluctuations and this is what we have seen recently. Despite global markets being up as a whole the short term return of the portfolio has been impacted by the movements in the Australian dollar. As the Australian dollar increases the value of the portfolio decreases and vice versa.
