Whitehaven Coal (WHC) has entered into a contract with Leighton Contractors (LEI) to construction the rail loop for the Maules Creek mine.

In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Whitehaven said the rail loop is a key part of the mine infrastructure and the longest lead time item for the project.

Whitehaven chief executive officer Paul Flynn said this was a very important milestone for the project.

"Once the mine begins production in the first quarter of calendar 2015 it will strengthen the company's position as a major low cost coal producer in Australia," Mr Flynn said.
