If you were ever wondering just how much difference a new CEO could make to a company, look no further than the chart below.

Andrew Mackenzie took up the helm at mining giant BHP Billiton 18 months ago and has spent that time honing its focus and attempting to boost productivity. According to Stephen Bartholomeusz, the process has led to an array of positive results, one of which is a drastic cleanout of its future projects pipeline.

Each year the company publishes a bubble graph showing the value and timing of its future projects. Take a look at the stark difference in the company’s graph during his predecessor Marius Klopper’s tenure and now following Mackenzie’s first full reporting year in the role.
