Sydney Airport (SYD) recorded its busiest year in 2013, rounding it off with a lift in December passenger traffic.

In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange, the airport said it served 37.9 million passengers in the calendar year, a lift of 2.6% compared with 36.9 million in 2012.

In December 2013, passenger traffic lifted by 3.5% to 3.4 million, compared with 3.3 million in December 2012.

"December 21 was our busiest day ever at the international terminal where we served over 47,300 passengers, as well as many meeters and greeters," chief executive officer Kerrie Mather said.

"Inbound passenger growth for the month was led by United Kingdom, China and Singapore nationals.

"The most popular Australian business and leisure destinations [were] Malaysia, China, the Philippines and New Zealand."
