Atlassian's cultural clout is being felt in the panelled offices of one of nation's top banks as Suncorp adopts the Australian software developer's innovative way to solve business problems.

Suncorp chief information officer Jeff Smith told an Amazon Web Services conference in Las Vegas last week that Atlassian had inspired the bank to innovate more.

Atlassian - an influential maker of business software tools used by NASA and Facebook, among others - has been conducting one-day company-wide hackathons since 2005, pitting engineering teams against each other to code software in just a day.

Mr Smith said the concept had jump-started an innovation policy at Suncorp.
