THE Northern Territory government has announced it will hold a state funeral for former AFL Richmond star Maurice Rioli, who died of a suspected heart attack on Christmas Day.

NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson said that as well as being passionate about football, Mr Rioli represented the vast electorate of Arafura in the NT Parliament for nine years to 2001.

His most recent work was as community services manager for the Tiwi Islands Shire, where he helped guide and was a role model for the Aboriginal Tiwi Island Bombers in the NT football league.

Born in 1957 on Melville Island in the Tiwis, where football has become a way of life for Aborigines, Mr Rioli was a boxer and rugby league footballer before playing more than 100 games with Richmond.

"I have spoken to Maurice's immediate family at this sad time and have extended the offer of a state funeral, which the family has accepted," Mr Henderson said. Details will be announced next week.
