THE first new TV show from Jerry Seinfeld since 1998 has been picked up by the Seven Network in Australia before a single episode has been shot.

Seven has bought the American version of the Seinfeld-produced The Marriage Ref, plus the rights to produce a local version.

Billed as "a comic reality series", The Marriage Ref sends celebrities and a relationship referee in to help squabbling couples make peace. The series was created by Seinfeld, though it is not yet clear whether he will appear in either version.

US network NBC is casting the show. Ads call for sparring couples in long-standing relationships to apply.

"Does your partner have an annoying, obnoxious habit or item that causes fights? Does your partner do things like withhold sex after a fight?" the ads ask.

Seven bought the program at trade show MIPCOM in Cannes.
