Just when you think you have ticked all the boxes and can sit back watching your investment grow something weird happens… a letter arrives in the mail.

You were warned by your family and friends when picking their brains about investing that CHESS statements would arrive and they should be filed away for safekeeping, but this is something different… It’s from a share registry.

What is a share registry?

A share registry is an organisation working on behalf of a listed investment that records changes in ownership, tax information, income preferences and issues statements.

It is important to follow the steps outlined in their communications to access your holding information and check it is accurate to avoid being incorrectly taxed, missing important updates or having dividends/distributions not handled as per your wishes.

A common misconception is that there is just one share registry used by all listed investments.

Like most industries there are multiple providers so you may eventually have holdings registered with several of them.

Where to check the share registry?

Before you go putting your personal information into any website it is best to confirm that it is the correct registry for your holding.

Most companies or fund managers will show their chosen registry or even offer a login portal on their own website under an Investor or Shareholder Centre.
