Qantas (QAN) is upgrading its exclusive premium lounges in Melbourne as part of its battle with Virgin Australia (VAH) over valuable corporate accounts, the Australian Financial Review reports.

The newspaper understands Qantas has closed its invitation-only Chairman’s Lounge in Melbourne for up to three months as it improves the facility to bring it in line with its offerings in Sydney and Canberra.

The club is said to offers members, each personally vetted by Qantas chairman Leigh Clifford, Rockpool-inspired food, a private library and an around-the-clock self-serve bar.

Virgin is also understood to be planning its own top-tier lounge, called "The Club", at Melbourne Airport within the next six months, according to the Financial Review.
