ACTOR Jacki Weaver was thrilled to win an Oscar nomination for Animal Kingdom. Also thrilled was her friend of 40 years Alan Finney, chairman of the AFI. He was in Los Angeles for the announcement and is still on a Hollywood high. The duo celebrated by dining at a casual restaurant but didn't go unnoticed. Finney said: "Two people in the next booth said to Jacki: 'You're the Australian from Animal Kingdom we loved it.' " Finney met Weaver around the time she starred in the movie Stork and won an AFI award for best lead actress in 1972. She was a bridesmaid at his wedding to Philippa and the trio revelled in the decadent six-hour lunches organised weekly by Derryn Hinch at the Underground in King Street during the 1980s when he was a long-luncher and boozer. For Hinch's 40th birthday, 600 of his "nearest and dearest personal friends" toasted him. Being AFI chairman, Finney has another connection to the film industry: daughter Sarah is the AFI's media manager, and naturally, she loves her boss.

Flying high for 365 days

BLOGGER Oliver Forbes, 24, embarked on a mission to snap a photo a day for 365 days, and he's done it. His idol is fashion blogger Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist, and much to Forbes's delight, there's a snap of them together when the American was in town. What began as a personal project for Forbes's blog has turned into the Fly from Nearby exhibition at the Little Lonsdale Street cafe 1000 # Bend, with $10 from every $220 framed photo sold donated to Headspace, the youth mental health foundation. One of Forbes's fans is Ruby Rose, the perennial party girl who attended the exhibition launch with this endorsement: "Oliver is a skilled and passionate photographer and he is these qualities in everyday life."

Taking the Ricky

THE poisoned chalice that is the Logies hosting gig usually leaves scorch marks on the victim just ask Wendy Harmer and Gretel Killeen. It could be time for a new approach, like the sledgehammer style of Ricky Gervais, who ensured the Golden Globes were memorable. A campaign to get Gervais to the Crown podium in May has started from sleepy Port Maquarie, where Star FM radio hosts Josh and Stacey put the idea to TV Week editor Emma Nolan. She conceded the British comedian has a "different sense of humour" and said she'd suggest the "great" idea to Channel Nine (may have been a joke). It would be terrific for ratings, not so great for talent-challenged soap stars who happen to be Scientologists.

A shapely chassis

MODEL Rebecca Judd (nee Twigley) is often chauffeured to events, her most recent glamour assignment the G'Day LA mateship extravaganza in the US. She is back home being Mrs Judd, wife of Chris the footballer, and headed out yesterday for a bite to eat at the Botanical in South Yarra. Then she hopped into a car, a Hyundai, which sponsors the Carlton footy club. There was no chauffeur she drove.
