POLICE will look at CCTV footage to try to determine the extent of a sophisticated ATM skimming scam inside the Jam Factory in South Yarra.

Police uncovered the scam, which includes a spy camera, a week ago when a customer noticed changes to the faceplate of the Commonwealth Bank ATM in the complex.

Detectives are uncertain how many customers have been scammed but said vast amounts of money could have been withdrawn from unsuspecting customers' accounts. Sources said the money could have been diverted to Britain.

Detective sergeant Phil Egan said it was a sophisticated operation and the scam device was installed by a fraudster with good knowledge of the system, and customers should check their bank statements.

A Commonwealth Bank spokesman said there had been a number of reports of its ATMs being targeted in Melbourne. ATMs at Karingal Hub, Frankston and Watergardens (Taylors Lakes) shopping centres had been compromised recently.
