National Australia Bank (NAB) has launched the latest bid to win mortgage customers, offering homeowners cash to refinance.

The bank will give $1000 to customers who refinance their home loans with the bank, waive the $600 application fee and offer a 15% discount on its mortgage protection insurance.

The move comes amid signs that official interest rate cuts are boosting the market, as home loan approvals rose 2.7% in June, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released last week.

The Reserve Bank of Australia last week cut the cash rate 25 basis points to 2.5%, a fresh record low.

In other recent shots in the mortgage war, Westpac Banking Corporation exceeded the RBA cut, dropping home loan rates by 28 basis points, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia said it would beat the other major banks' fixed interest rates.
