LOS ANGELES. The Spanish colonial-style Hollywood mansion where Marilyn Monroe died in 1962 is on the market for $US3.6 million ($A4.1 million).

The single-storey property, built in 1929, which spreads lavishly over 2000 square metres of land, is "the crown jewel" of the luxurious LA neighbourhood of Brentwood, according to the selling agency's website.

Monroe lived in the house for only six months before her sleeping pill overdose death, having bought the house for $US90,000.

The current owner did not permit media access to the property.

Monroe memorabilia is highly coveted. A burial spot near the star's grave was sold for $US4.6 million in 2009.
