Why throw a wobbly, when you can launch a sheep? Plus, a tool that can show you there's a lot more to marketing than just a bunch of suits pointing at charts.
This week's reviews of the best apps for work and play include a marketing tool that can introduce you to marketing challenges you didn't even know you had and an app to help you throw sheep around, rather than count them.
MarketingProfs Q&A
Brand brand, blah blah. Everyone knows how important marketing is. BUT DO YOU REALLY? (Cue music from Perry Mason when he makes a major discovery that will definitely clear his client in court, but only at the last possible second).
Marketing, it seems, isn't just a bunch of suits in a room, pointing at charts and shouting about brand positioning and just generally being over-enthusiastic about everything. It's the sort of foundation that can make or break a business.
So we arrive at a free app for iPhone and iTouch called MarketingProfs Q&A. It's an app based on the Marketing Profs website (http://www.marketingprofs.com). Essentially, it's a list of questions people ask about a huge range of topics, all related to marketing. Marketing professionals who have been vetted by the community then respond to the questions.
There are too many topics to list here, but some examples include email and SMS marketing, whether to publish price lists on websites, brand name and tag line guidance and how to write mail-outs. People even submit documents or slideshows for feedback. You can read through other people's questions and answers or you can submit a question and get some responses.
This is really a fascinating tool. I can't imagine anyone involved in any sort of business that wouldn't find relevance somewhere in this mammoth list of questions and responses. It helps you understand the mystical, magical, mysterious world of marketing, but also gives you insight into problems your business might be facing that you might not even be aware of.

Sheep Launcher
I've developed a bit of a reputation in my office of the swearing-like-a-sailor variety. I'm just one of those people who has to let the stress out somehow – my choice of technique is expletives. But why throw an wobbly, when you can launch a sheep?
This free app for iPhone and iTouch cheers me up when I'm cranky and gets the stress out of my system. I think it's the little guy's face and its aviator's leather cap that eases the tension.
Basically, there's a sheep flying through the stratosphere and to stop him from falling you have to launch him higher and higher, by tapping him on your screen. Assistance comes in the form of rocket launchers, helium tanks and as you get higher, alien space-craft.
I thought I'd perhaps reached the end of the road when I left the earth's light blue skies and entered the darkness of space, but given that my high score was 702,213 and the highest score so far on global servers is 2,147,483,647, I'd say I've got a fair amount more sheep launching at my disposal.
