Is Twitter really the best news gathering tool?

Twitter may be a common tool for gathering news in the US, but is it really the best judge as to what is quality content?

A recent study by Pew Research Centre in the US found that around half of the country’s Twitter users use the service to gather news. But is this really a good thing?

On a hunch, yes. Better to have news and content valued and ranked in importance by people rather than a search algorithm or a machine, one would think.

But you might consider that point of view when you look at this infographic. Perhaps this Twitter data is just a mirror of society in general, but it seems people care more about Miley Cyrus than they do about Syria. They would also rather talk about Amanda Bynes fall into notoriety rather than the NSA hacking debacle.

This graphic actually makes Google News look like a better judge of quality content than Twitter – and it sometimes airs press releases as if they are stories!
