Etihad Airways has again lifted its stake in Virgin Australia Holdings (VAH).

In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Etihad said it had taken a 13.41% interest in the airline, up from its previous 12.35%.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline has Foreign Investment Review Board approval to lift its interest to 19.9%.

The Australian Financial Review reports that Etihad has now overtaken Richard Branson's Virgin Group to become the airline's third-largest shareholder.
