Echo Entertainment Group Ltd chief executive John Redmond has hit out at rival Crown Ltd and the NSW government, saying lack of competition in Sydney was not to blame for a low share of VIP gambling revenue, The Australian Financial Review reports.

According to the newspaper, Mr Redmond warned competition in Brisbane would kill off Echo's Treasury Casino, calling Crown boss James Packer's assertion that Echo neglected its Queensland properties "completely inappropriate".

Mr Redmond said competition was not simply a measure of how many casinos a city had and other gambling opportunities should be considered.

“When people say there is no competition in Queensland, you actually have the same number of pokies as the Las Vegas strip," he said, the AFR reports.

"It’s hard to argue there’s no competition.”
