As voters were reminded in the recent election, when images of pollies wearing hard hats and hi-vis vests were often in the public eye, public relations roles are not limited merely to the private sector.

"Employers of PR graduates tend to be PR consultancies and agencies, government departments, large corporations and non-government organisations," says Swinburne University of Technology's Dr Robert Gill.

The many public relations jobs for government bodies include government relations, internal communications, community engagement, publicity and issues and crisis communication.

While students will undertake a public relations major, which covers topics including writing; issues, crisis and risk communication; and events management; they will also complete key foundational units on topics like marketing concepts and the foundations of statistics.

Duration: Three years full-time or part-time equivalent.

Time: At least six hours week per per unit.

Where: Online.

When: Intakes on trimester system - start November, February or July.
