Children may love dancing, but one expert says finding enough dancers to teach the next generation can be a challenge.

The head of teacher training at the Australian Ballet School, Sheryl Bates, says: "We provide teacher training to ensure there is a larger pool of appropriately trained teachers for the future."

The course is open to professional dancers - past or present - with a minimum of three years' high-profile dancing experience.

"Graduates are trained to teach in the schools of major performing companies around the world," Bates says.

A key component is a practicum, where trainee teachers receive hands-on experience in a teaching environment. For many, it also completes a career cycle.

Duration - Two years full-time, or part-time equivalent.

Time - Expect to study eight hours a week in a one-on-one mentorship.

Where - The Australian Ballet School, Southbank, Melbourne. Blended delivery is also planned for those wishing to study online.

When - Follows school calendar year (four terms). Intake is flexible.
