Drilling service provider Boart Longyear Ltd has appointed Rex McLennan as a non-executive director, effective August 24.

Mr McLennan was most recently chief financial officer for agricultural products company Viterra Inc.

He was previously executive vice president and chief financial officer for Placer Dome Inc and held leadership roles at Imperial Oil Ltd, Exxon's Canadian public oil company.

Boart Longyear chair Barbara Jeremiah said Mr McLennan's "strong financial background, international business experience and knowledge of the resources sector will bring significant value to our shareholders".

The company's share price has tumbled by 70.1% to 56 cents in the year-to-date as mining investment wanes (see Roger Montgomery's Inside the mining services disaster).
