BHP Billiton's rail and port operations at Port Hedland remained shut down last night, after a fatality on site early yesterday morning.

A 27-year-old contractor was killed in an accident involving a crane at the company's Finucane Island port.

A BHP Billiton spokeswoman said workers had been sent home and it was not clear how long the port and rail operations would be halted. BHP Billiton shares were down 3? at $44.42.
