The Australian sharemarket closed stronger today as a lift in the iron ore price boosted the major miners.

At the 4.15pm (AEDT) official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index added 40.2 points, or 0.75%, to 5,377, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 36.2 points, or 0.68%, to 5,387.

IG market strategist Evan Lucas noted the 10-day trading high iron ore reached today.

"The more we hear about ‘increasing domestic demand’ and the acceleration of infrastructure projects like the rail projects, we will see copper and iron ore moving higher still," Mr Lucas said.
