Aust stocks close slightly higher

Local market edges up in thin trade as Commonwealth Bank prints a fresh record.

The Australian sharemarket edged higher today after the iron ore price held steady and the Commonwealth Bank reached a fresh record high.

At the 4.15pm (AEST) official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index added 14.3 points, or 0.26%, to 5,510.8, while the broader All Ordinaries index put on 14.3 points, or 0.26%, to 5,490.2 points.

CMC Markets sales trader Betty Lam noted early buying support for BHP today as the iron ore price held steady.

She also noted strong gains in Commonwealth Bank shares.
