The Australian sharemarket closed steady today as investors lack catalysts to spur buying ahead of the release of US employment data tonight.

At the 4.15pm (AEST) official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index added 9.3 points, or 0.17%, to 5,458.1 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index edged up 8.4 points, or 0.15%, at 5,438.8 points.

Macquarie Private Wealth senior private client adviser James Rosenberg said there had been no news flow to set a huge amount of interest alight, with volumes subdued as investors wait for the release of US non-farm payrolls.
