2012's biggest clean tech deal-makers
The names of the leading investors in clean technology for 2012 are out, with a major shake-up seen over the past 12 months.
The list, from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, is complete with a new leader in every single one of the 12 categories measured. Among the biggest players were the European Investment Bank in asset finance, Japan's Toray Industries in M&A, Germany's HEAG in venture capital and private equity and US-based giant Goldman Sachs in public markets.
“This is the eighth year we have prepared annual league tables showing the most active deal-makers in the sector,” Michael Liebreich, chief executive of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, said.
“The transactions in 2012 that helped to produce winners this time included everything from a $1 billion-plus offshore wind financing, to a $701 million energy storage acquisition, to an $18 million venture capital investment in a solid-state lighting technology developer.”
The figures come on the back of news from BNEF that clean energy investment retreated in 2012, for only the second time since the research firm starting keeping records in 2004.
All-up $US268.7 billion was spent on clean technology in 2012, the second highest yearly figure, though 11 per cent down on the 2011 figure.
