TECHNOLOGY SPECTATOR: The Opposition's NBN handbrake
Let's start on a positive note. We now have a far more substantial broadband plan from the Opposition. The NBN survives, albeit a significantly reduced NBN, and also of course one that involves significantly less cost for the government.
While the Opposition – at least its shadow minister – has now indicated that it will not demolish the plan the end result might be the same nonetheless. But before anything happens the survival of even this second-rate plan depends on the relatively moderate Malcolm Turnbull surviving the internal Liberal party opposition from his more right-wing colleagues, notably the previous Shadow Minister for Communications, Nick Minchin.
The plan – as it is now on the table – could have worked if they had won the 2007 election, but that opportunity has gone and the world has moved on. An important political point that the Opposition also should take into consideration is that the electorate likes the NBN – so why downgrade it?
