A contractor at Rio Tinto's (RIO) Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in Mongolia has laid off about 2,000 workers, Bloomberg TV Mongolia reported on Wednesday.

The workers were employed at the mine by contractor Redpath Mongolia LLC.

Rio Tinto is the project developer and operator, and owns a stake in the project through its majority-owned Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd unit, which owns 66% of Oyu Tolgoi.

The Mongolian government controls the rest.
