Transurban: Result 2014

Australia's largest toll road operator posted record earnings, but it didn't all flow to shareholders.

Transurban’s chief executive, Scott Charlton, must have smiled when Tony Abbott said he wanted to be Australia’s ‘infrastructure prime minister’ during the last election. Abbott went on to commit $3bn to the WestConnex toll road in Sydney and the East-West link in Melbourne – and at a time when neither had business plans.

As Transurban has a monopoly over toll roads on the eastern seaboard, it would inevitably be the biggest beneficiary. Road upgrades generally lead to higher traffic flows, as was seen in the company’s impressive full-year result.
