Qantas (QAN) - $4.52: As subscribers would already be aware, the Tesna syndicate has pulled out of the deal to purchase the Ansett carcass. Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon must be dancing in the aisles, although probably not pulling a trolley behind him. Qantas shares have risen 16% since issue 91/Nov 01 (Subscribe to offer/Hold for the Upside - $3.91) and are now around 12-month highs. With new aircraft coming on stream - and its pick of Ansett staff to man them - Qantas is close to cementing its airborne monopoly. If we had our pick of the world's airlines, we'd probably plump for this one. Does that mean the shares are a buy? No. This is a notoriously difficult industry in which to turn a dollar, even for monopolies. We wouldn't like to see too much of subscribers' money tied up in this stock but those that do own it should continue to HOLD FOR THE UPSIDE.
