The $18.5m loss accounting software provider MYOB reported for the half year to 30 June shouldn’t worry shareholders too much. The company incurred $28.3m in ‘specific items’ related to the disposal of its UK business. For the ongoing business, revenue was up 6.6% to $92m and net profit rose 27.2% to $9.8m. As a bonus, shareholders will be able to vote on a proposed 12.9 cent per share distribution (part special dividend, part capital return) at the annual general meeting in November.
There have been a number of changes at MYOB. Tim Reed, former managing director of MYOB Australia, has replaced founder Craig Winkler as chief executive officer. This may be a result of the shareholder spat we discussed on 11 Jun 08. Secondly, the company has made a shift towards internet services by spending $7m for SmartyHost, a web hosting service. We suspect shareholders might be better served if management focused on the accounting software market, where MYOB is an established brand. With the stock price down 25% since 11 Jun 08 (Hold - $1.385), MYOB is on our radar but at this stage it remains a HOLD.
