Childcare: child’s play at G8?

Five years after the collapse of ABC Learning Centres, childcare centre aggregator G8 Education enters the ASX300. Nathan Bell examines whether it will meet the same fate.

Winston Churchill, who knew a thing or two about these things, said to an audience at Harrow School in October 1941, ‘Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever give up’. G8 Education has taken that singular message to heart. Why else would one persevere with the business model of one of Australia’s largest-ever corporate failures?

On 6 Nov 08, former market darling ABC Learning Centres went into voluntary administration. More recently, ABC’s chief executive Eddy Groves declared bankruptcy, owing $20m to creditors. But just before its collapse, a lookalike emerged.
