How come the Australian dollar has been so sick lately?

It hasn't really. What's been happening is that the US dollar has been strengthening against most currencies due to the performance of the US economy and the number of investment opportunities available in their capital markets. So it's the greenback going up (the glass is half full) rather than the Aussie going down (half empty).
