Ex-Leighton Holdings (LEI) chief executive officer Wal King has launched legal action against Fairfax Media (FXJ) for defamation and has accused the group of "attempted coercion or extortion" after it allegedly threatened to post details of his personal credit card on the internet, The Australian reports.
According to the newspaper, Mr King's solicitors have commenced defamation proceedings against Fairfax following the media group's reportage of his involvement in alleged corrupt activity in Leighton's Irag business.
The newspaper also reports Mr King has written to Fairfax and demanded an apology regarding an article that quoted UGL chairman Trevor Rowe as asserting Mr King was "totally out of control" during his tenure as Leighton chief.
The Australian reports Mr King's counsel Atanaskovic Hartnell sent a 10-page letter to Fairfax last week that denies he approved a bribe to be paid by Leighton in Iraq.
