Rupert Murdoch's Twitter tirade against Google and the White House, that the web giant and the US government were in cahoots with regards to stymieing the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), highlights the battle lines drawn between content producers and aggregators.
Murdoch's risible allegations that Google is an online pirate may not mean a lot but emotions are at a fever pitch and the likes of News Ltd will not be pleased with news that the legislation aimed at curbing online piracy may now be ditched altogether.
The legislation, designed to shut down access to overseas websites that traffic in stolen content or counterfeit goods, has already seen internet companies ramp up their lobbying efforts in recent months, with Wikipedia the latest to join the fight.
This infographic, courtesy of Motley News gives you an idea of just how strong the opposition to SOPA has been and it's unlikely that the mood is going to change despite the fact that the White House is having second thoughts.
SOPA will probably not be consigned to the bin in its entirety and the best case scenario is probably the introduction of a watered down version, one that keeps IP creators happy without impinging too much on internet freedom.
Neither side will be happy with the outcome and this debate still has a long way to go.
