Tax with Max: Calculating pension starting dates

Calculating pension starting dates, franking credits on ETFs, and more.

I will be turning 60 in February 2014 and wish to convert my SMSF to pension mode. The SMSF’s members are my partner and I. My partner turns 60 in April 2017. Is the trigger for the start of the tax-free period the start of the current financial year, my birth date, or can it be the start of the 2014-2015 financial year?

Answer: The starting date for a pension is the date that the trustees decide that the pension will commence. This is often dependent upon the date specified by the member as to when they want to start receiving the pension.
