Rio Tinto to fight Rinehart royalty ruling: report

Mining giant to appeal decision ordering it to pay $200m royalties to Hancock.

Rio Tinto Ltd will appeal a court decision that may force it to pay around $200 million in royalties to Gina Rinehart's companies Hancock Prospecting and Wright Prospecting, The Australian Financial Review reports.

According to the newspaper, the appeal over a New South Wales Supreme Court decision concerns royalties not paid to Hancock and Wright Prospecting for production of part of the Channar and Eastern Range mines.

The miner has made a pre-tax provision for the claim.

The AFR previously reported damages had been agreed to between the parties.
