Let the US jump over a fiscal cliff

The approach of Washington's debt ceiling offers policymakers a rare chance to negotiate a path to long-term budget health – but only by going over the cliff first.

At the end of this year, the US economy faces the so-called 'fiscal cliff': the Bush tax cuts will expire, and as a result of the 2011 deal that raised the debt ceiling, automatic spending cuts will begin.
