Financial Review heads to the small screen with Sunday show

Financial Review Sunday, a new 30-minute business television program co-produced with the Nine Network and Fairfax Media, will debut this weekend.

The program, hosted by Nine News presenter and former Canberra press gallery journalist Deborah Knight, will screen at 10am, going head-to-head with the ABC's Inside Business program and Meet the Press on Network Ten.

Knight said the launch of the show reflected small investors' increasing interest in equities, particularly through self-managed super funds, which - at $440 billion - now account for about a third of all super assets.

The latest Australian Securities Exchange share ownership study, released in 2011, found that 7.3 million Australians, or 43 per cent of the country's adult population, own shares either directly or through unlisted managed funds.

"We all want to make money, we all have bills to pay and we all have a national wellbeing and it's crucial to get knowledge about it," Knight said.

"It's closing a gap and at an important time. We're going to air just before the federal budget and in a federal election year so it's very timely - couldn't be a better time to launch it."

Financial Review Sunday is backed by Westpac and CPA Australia. The Australian Financial Review is owned by Fairfax Media, which owns The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Brett Clegg, group director of business media at Fairfax, said the program would deliver a mix of breaking news and interviews with business leaders, with associated coverage to appear in the Financial Review's print and digital formats and Fairfax's metropolitan mastheads and video platforms.

He said the show "brings to life on the small screen defining elements of the Financial Review", including company and political news, analysis, property and investment tips.
