Breaking the patent stranglehold

The patent wars raging across the globe and the news that Apple has done a deal with a renowned patent troll Digitude Innovations has reignited the issue of tech companies joining forces with trolls to gain a competitive advantage in a cutthroat environment.

With tech outfits racing to amass patents one has to wonder whether this push to put profit over innovation is a counterproductive exercise that bodes ill for all involved.

As this infographic from MBAOnline.com highlights, there is a lot more than just dollars at stake, and perhaps it’s time for a rethink on how the patent system operates.

The system designed to protect tech innovators is now under the thrall of tech companies that will try anything to hurt the competition, and outfits that hoard patents as ammunition to extort royalties. The end result is bad for innovators, businesses and in the long run, consumers.
