The benchmark hit an intra-day high of 5,252.1, but at 1540 AEST had pulled back to 5,248.5, 0.27 per cent higher than yesterday's close.
IG chief market strategist Chris Weston said the increased chance of a November rate cut following today’s job losses had contributed to the spike the spike in the local bourse.
However he said the rallying Chinese market was a more important factor.
“The Australian market has weighed up the prospect that jobs are being lost against a rate cut and pushed up to the highest level in five years,” Mr Weston said.
“Although it has to be said that when China rallied, so did the ASX 200 and we feel this was probably the bigger driver.”
Consumer staples, industrials and telcos led the market.
