The local market closed flat for the third straight session today but gained during the month of July, supported by materials, financials and energy.

At 1615 AEST official market close, the S&P/ASX 200 benchmark index nudged 0.1% higher to 5,052 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index lifted 0.19% to 5,035.7 points.

IG markets analyst Chris Weston said the ASX 200 was the second-best performing market in Asia for the month of July.

"When you have the material, energy and financial sectors gaining 10%, 6.8% and 6.3% respectively, and given the weights these sectors have on the broader market, you can see why the ASX is on fire," Mr Weston said.
