Abbott defiant on PPL: report

PM expected to reject findings from Commission of Audit seeking to rein in $5.5bn PPL scheme.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is tipped to reject findings from the Commission of Audit that seek to rein in his signature $5.5 billion a year paid parental leave scheme, The Australian reports.

According to the newspaper, the Commission of Audit has suggested a number of alternatives that reduce both the scope and cost of the scheme.

The alternatives would reduce the number of parents eligible for the scheme, thus easing the cost on big business which is facing a 1.5 per cent levy to fund the scheme.

The Australian reports one senior government source said the commission’s report "defines the problems but does not offer solutions".
