A pearler of a family business

This is the story of an English Lord, a hard-working bus driver and a little pearl farm that has grown into a shining retail and tourism empire in WA’s sunny Broome.

When Baron Alistair McAlpine of West Green Hampshire died at his home in Italy in January this year there was a service for him far away in in Broome, WA, where hundreds of locals and their families gathered to remember a man who had touched so many of their lives.

And few families were more affected by his passing than the Banfields of Willie Creek Pearls, for it was Lord McAlpine who was responsible for this farming family from southern WA turning up in Broome and becoming one of its great family businesses.
