Business Description: Starpharma Holdings Limited (SPL) is involved in the development of dendrimers nanotechnology-based for pharmaceuticals life-science and other applications. SPL has two operating companies, Starpharma Pty. Ltd. in Melbourne, Australia and Dendritic Nanotechnologies (DNT) in the USA. Its securities are also traded in the US (OTCQX:SPHRY).
Strategy Analysis: SPL seeks to commercialise its dendrimer nanotechnology used in pharmaceutical, life-science and other applications. SPL will engage larger partners (as well as the sharemarket) to help fund development and commercialise products.
Products based on SPL´s dendrimer technology, including diagnostics and laboratory reagents, are already in market. The Company´s lead pharmaceutical development product is VivaGel®, a topical gel for prevention of infection from HIV, genital herpes (HSV-2) and bacterial vaginosis. SPL has additional development programs in the areas of drug delivery, siRNA transfection reagents and targeted diagnostics, and is exploring dendrimer opportunities in materials science with applications as diverse as adhesives, lubricants and water remediation.
Starpharma Holdings reported a net loss of $8.93m for the year ended 30 June 2011. Revenues from ordinary activities were $2.13bn, up 1% from last year. Basic and Diluted EPS was (4.0) cents compared to (3.0) cents last year. The net operating cash outflow was $6.48m compared to an outflow of $3.63m in the pcp. No dividend was declared.
