Company Overview
Company Overview
Progen Pharmaceuticals Limited (PGL) is a Brisbane-based biotechnology company specialising in the research and development of potential biopharmaceutical therapeutics for treating cancer (PI-88) and primary liver cancer (PI-166), a devastating disease with few treatment options available to patients.
Company History
Progen was established in 1990, originally focused on the manufacture and supply of molecular biology reagents and kits. Since then, Progen has diversified into the research and development of biopharmaceuticals and contract manufacture. Since its listing in December 1995 at $0.30 per share, the company has focused its activities on its lead compound, an anti-cancer drug called PI-88. PGL was renamed to its current name in April 2007.
Differentiating Factor
PGL specialises in understanding the role of heparan sulfate, a complex sugar, in cancer disease processes and have developed a small-molecule drug development program in this area. PI-88 is currently in Phase II clinical trials for malanoma, liver and lung cancer while PI-166 is in Phase Ib clinical trials.
Major Customers & Competitors
As a biotechnology R&D company, PGL has no customers as such. Nor does it have competition in the true sense of the word, for although there are many biotech firms researching a therapy for cancer, there are many varieties of cancer, and the sufferers have many different needs.
