Business Description: Genetic Technologies Limited (GTG) is a biotechnology company engaged in genetic testing service business, licensing international patents and conducting research activities on the impact of DNA on health. GTG has operations in Australia, China, Canada, Switzerland and USA. Its primary focus is diagnostic products for cancer management. GTG provides genetic tests products & services in three areas: Medical, Profiling and Canine.
Strategy Analysis: GTG are using its patent position on the sequencing of junk DNA (95%) and how it interacts with controlling DNA (5%) to generate licensee revenue. The strategy going forward is to take on the largest US genetics corporation Applera in an effort to force the industry to accept the validity of its patent position.
The second strategic direction of the business is to build up a genetic testing business in the Asia Pacific region. This strategy was on the way to being achieved in August 2005; with GTG signing a distribution agreement in Japan for the ACTN3 SportsGene Test. GTG has genetic testing facilities in Australia and provides tests for paternity, breast cancer, athletic performance and forensic testing. It aims to continue to grow the revenue for this business and expand the variety of tests available to the public.
