Reasons to invest
- With a five year-plus track record, AMP Capital’s sustainable alpha approach integrates environmental, social and governance factors with financial measures to gain deeper insights into a company’s intangible assets and subsequently uncover its true value.
- The potential to deliver strong returns through growth and value cycles via a dedicated, in-house team of portfolio managers and social/environmental research specialists.
- AMP Capital manages one of the largest portfolios of investments with a sustainable focus in Australia - around $2.18 billion for this fund alone (as at 31 March 2008).
How AMP Capital chooses sustainable investments
AMP Capital's sustainable alpha investment process aims for strong returns over the long term by seeking out the hidden value in companies. To do this AMP Capital researches their intangible assets, such as quality of customer and employee relationships and commitment to environmental sustainability, and combine these findings with traditional financial analysis.
In the same way that most of an iceberg is hidden under water, AMP Capital’s research into the top 100 companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange shows that over 75% of company value is made up of intangible assets*. Intangible assets are unlike tangible assets such as plant and equipment that can be valued relatively easily by investors. Companies that manage their intangibles effectively have the potential to provide better returns to their shareholders.
The sustainable alpha process is a disciplined one. The steps include:
- Quantitative review of stocks on a range of financial measures.
- Deeper levels of research into areas such as industry structure, managerial capability and long term trends.
- Ranking of company performance on measures of sustainability, environmental and social responsibility and corporate governance by our in-house research specialists.
- Portfolio construction to comprise a diverse yet focused portfolio that aims for above market returns.
